Newer Technology, Inc. announced on Thursday its RAID Level 1 (mirrored) "Guardian MAXimus" storage system. Capacities from 250 GB to 1 TB are available.

The two drive system writes data simultaneously to two separate, paired internal drives for redundancy, the RAID Level 1 configuration, also called "mirrored" storage. The drive works with any computer that has FireWire 400, FireWire 800 or a USB2 interface.

The SATA drives use the Oxford 924 chip set as a bridge to FireWire and USB.

Also included free are: ProSoft Engineering Data Backup 3, NovaStor NovaBACKUP, and Intech SpeedTools Utilities. Mac OS X 10.2 or later is required to support FW800 and USB2.

The Guardian Maximus is immediately available in five pre-configured 7,200 rpm versions: 250 GB, 400 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB. The 250 GB system is priced at U$S319.99. The 1TB system is priced at US$1179.99. The units are available via the retail channel or through Newertech's exclusive online distributor, Other World Computing.
