Review: iPad2 GripStand 2 Bundle
The Newer Technology company makes a protective back and stand for your iPad 2. The Gripstand and
GripBase pairing is a great way to watch your iPad content hands free, or, if you're a teacher, present items on the
iPad to students without having to awkwardly holding it.
Weighing in at under $40, the NuGuard GripStand2 / GripBase Bundle is a great item for all of your iPad
Skip down to the bottom for the quick review.
The GripStand allows me to remove the iPad, and provides a comfortable handle (which doubles as the
stand) if I need to move around the classroom or demo area.
The GripStand 2 is a great portable stand for on the road too. Unlike the GripBase, the GripStand 2 is
small and lightweight. It comes with a velcro belt that allows you to create a suspension for your iPad 2 and
GripStand. The option that NewerTech suggests is around the back of the front seat (allowing the passengers in the back
to watch something on the iPad). But if you're traveling by yourself, this fits into a carryon easily.
As a studio artist (and while I type this review), the GripStand 2 provides a reliable support for the
iPad. It sits alongside the desktop monitors, allowing me to watch videos or control music as I work.
The GripBase is a unit that will probably live in the room, or area of the house that you want to view
the iPad 2 in a more 'hands-free' mode. The kitchen, the den, or sharing space alongside your computer in your office.
The base module is a fairly heavy item, but you want it to be. It's heavy enough so that you can engage the iPad 2 as
a touch device, without knocking it over.
The GripBase can conform to several different positions for viewing and even typing (if you like typing
directly on the screen).
I've been using a soft case with a rigid stand built into it. The cover I own affords protection for
the screen, but it doesn't have enough space to hold the Grip's protective back and the iPad 2 together. If you want
protection for the glass/front, you'll need to get a cover that allows for the extra size, or doesn't require the entire
iPad 2 to be encased on all sides. Apple's Smart Cover is an option to consider. You may think that the Smart Cover
is already a 'stand' option. The Smart Cover is not a stand. The GripStand 2 and/or the GripBase are real stands.
If you're looking for a quick gift for that Mac-head on your list, this is the one that's an easy
Sturdy. Hinges hold their place when the angle is set.
Clean Looking. Fits well with the clean lines of the iPad2
Easy to set up. Mom can do this without a phone call.
The case back is a little tricky to get the iPad into, but super secure once it's in there.
The GripStand handle is removed when you're using the GripBase, but there's no place to stow it. You'll
just leave it on the table, or put it in the office.
The protective back adds a small amount of extra size to the iPad 2's dimensions.
You can find it online at www.newertch.com in two colors. Get the black one, I did.
