NewerTech have announced a kit to enable any IDE/ATAPI/ATA/SATA (5.25″, 3.5″ or 2.5″) hard drive (HD) or optical drive to be easily connected up via a USB 2.0 port. From a technical stance, I’d find this very convenient for transferring data from a faulty/old HD to a new unit (which would usually be installed in the Mac, unless it were a PowerMac/Mac Pro). However, for those of you who don’t know this, the price difference between an internal and external (with all it’s associated power unit, data cables and NewerTech kitsometimes over-fancy box) can be quite significant. So if you’re hankering after more storage but find the external HD prices too high (and don’t have a PowerMac/Mac Pro) then you could do far worse than this little kit (provided you take care of the HD as it wouldn’t be given any protection from the elements/shocks without a case).
